THE MINISTER'S MOMENT
March 2008
“Marking Time”
In high school we used to meet several weeks before school started for “band camp.” This was a time for us to learn the music, marching, and maneuvers for the halftime field show. Let me tell you, if you have never done it, marching and playing an instrument at the same time is not an easy thing! You know what they say about walking and chewing gum? It’s true!
It seemed like I was always out of step. Every time the drum major or director called out, “Left, Left, Left, Right, Left” I was sure that they were looking at me. I had trouble with marching while I was moving from one place on the field to another, especially when we had a long distance to cover in a short amount of time. I always seemed to get out of step.
I looked forward to arriving at the yard line marker and “marking time” on that spot, even if it was only for a moment. When we stood in one spot and “marked time” I was able to get my bearings back and once again join everyone else on the right foot.
Everyone’s life can get out of step from time to time. We get too busy with daily tasks or commitments and our lives get out of step. Dealing with an illness, whether it is the flu or something more serious can knock our lives out of step. Major changes such as the loss of a loved one can really put us out of step in life.
If you feel that your life is a bit out of step or maybe way off course, I invite you to pause and “mark time.” We can mark time through daily prayer and scripture reading. We also do this in the life of the church. Every Sunday we gather and mark time together by getting our lives back in step with God.
The week before Easter is commonly referred to as “Holy Week.” This is the best week of the year to get our lives back in step, because we are following in the footsteps of Jesus. During this week we remember the events leading up to Easter.
Palm Sunday – March 16 – 10:30 a.m.
Maundy Thursday – March 20 – 7:00 p.m.
Good Friday – March 21 – 8:00 p.m.
Easter Sunday – March 23 – 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m.
Mark your calendar and join us for worship. Following Jesus on his last week is not an easy journey, but it is the best way to get our lives back in step!
See you on the journey!
Seth
