Meals on Wheels

a food service for those unable to prepare their own

Twenty five years ago, a dedicated member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, the late Allene Fouts, working with the North Kansas City Hospital, established the Northland Meals on Wheels program.

They started with only 2 or 3 clients but they now serve some 150 people daily.

Ten years ago, the late Allene Fouts asked for volunteers from the congregation of Northminster.  Sufficient drivers came forward to cover one route each week.  Many members have given their time and gasoline to this project and some of the original drivers still serve.   Milt & Ruby Dickey have taken over the work of Allene Founts and direct this activity.

The service is provided to aged, handicapped, homebound, or convalescent individuals who are unable to prepare meals or shop for food. A hot, nutritionally balanced meal is delivered to the home daily Monday through Friday. A minimal fee is charged to cover food costs.

Drivers also check on the individuals to see that they have adequate heating and cooling seasonally.   In many instances, these drivers are the only person to come in contact with the shut-ins all day.

Anyone interested in dedicating some time to this worthwhile project may call the church office or Meals on Wheels at 816-691-1057.

THE CLAY COUNTY CLOTHES CLOSET
"We Clothe Our Kids With Love"

Mission Statement:

"To assist in restoring dignity, self-respect and hope to the families residing in Clay County Missouri, where circumstances have denied them basic human needs, such as adequate clothing, through non-judgmental service by dedicated and committed volunteers."

History: The Clay County Clothes Closet was founded in 1959 by Church Women United of Clay County. The first place of operation was in the basement of a drug store, where approximately 125 families were served the first. year. As word spread and a referral system developed, the ministry expanded, and in 1960 the closet was incorporated as a not-for-profit agency in the state of Missouri. Soon afterward an unused school building was made available by the North Kansas City School District, and the operation was transferred to the old Faubion School. There was a real need for a permanent location, and so in 1964 a suitable building was located and purchased at 3939 N. Cleveland. Thirty years later, after packing and moving the contents to storage, the old building was demolished and a new one was constructed on the site. The new building was dedicated in May 1995 and reopened in July 1995.

The primary purpose of the organization was, and still is, to adequately clothe school children, although service is extended to all age groups. Donated usable clothing is redistributed, and new clothing is provided to school children. Each school age child is provided with at least five complete outfits, half of them new. Each year approximately 2,000 individuals are served. Referrals are sent to the Closet by social
services such as United Services, Division of Family Services, Love Inc., Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries, churches, schools, and juvenile court. There are no paid employees at the Closet. Over 6,000 hours are logged annually by volunteers representing many churches throughout Clay County.

These volunteers sort, clean, mend, size and stock clothing as well as assist clients. All funds are directed to clothing the children, with the exception of normal expenses to maintain the building and grounds, utilities, insurance and supplies. The Closet depends entirely upon donations. Funding comes from churches, schools, individuals, businesses, service and charitable organizations and the United Way.

The Closet is managed by a volunteer board of directors consisting of 21 community member. The Clothes Closet is open every Tuesday by appointment. The Clothes Closet accepts donation at any time and has provided a drop-off window at the rear of their building.

Just remember, "If you wouldn't wear it, don't donate it."
